T.J. Wilham

Investigative Producer

T.J. Wilham joined KOAT Action 7 News in September 2018. He is originally from Indianapolis and is a graduate of Butler University. He joined the Target 7 team as an investigative producer after spending 15 years in the newspaper business as a correspondent, police reporter and an investigative journalist.

Just before coming to KOAT, T.J. was the director of the Albuquerque Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center, which he spearheaded the building of in 2012. The center specialized in getting real time information and analytics to police officers. It was also responsible for delivering a daily television newscast. His work building the information center was recognized as “Project of the Year” by the International Association of Law Enforcement Planners in 2013.

For 15 years T.J. covered crime in three cities and was the lead police reporter for the Albuquerque Journal. Prior to coming to Albuquerque, he spent nine years nine years in Indiana covering stories for the Indianapolis Star and Muncie Star Press. In addition, he taught newswriting at Ball State University while he was earning a master's degree in secondary education. During his journalism career, the Hoosier native covered stories including the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Hurricane Katrina, the Indiana tire fires and spent two days interviewing one of Albuquerque’s most notorious serial killers. T.J.'s journalistic work has been recognized by the Associated Press, the Society of Professional Journalists, The Hoosier State Press Association and the New Mexico Press Association. In 2004, The Society of Professional Journalists awarded T.J. top honors in three major categories – investigative journalism, deadline writing and non-deadline writing. In 2009, he was awarded the Associated Press’ “Story of the Year” for his writing on the tragic case of a three-year-old being buried in an Albuquerque park. He has also appeared on Dateline NBC after spearheading the investigation into the 2005 killings that left five people dead including two police officers. The veteran journalist has also appeared on CourtTV discussing various cases he has covered.

T.J. is also a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, the FBI and Muncie Police Citizen's academies, the Federal Emergency Management Terrorism training course and has been trained by the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association on legal issues and the media.

T.J. has lived in New Mexico since 2004 and had made the Land of Enchantment his home.
