The New Mexico State Police are investigating a police shooting that left the suspect injured in Santa Fe. The Santa Fe Police Department responded to a report of a suicidal man that shot a firearm.SFPD officers reported they heard gunshots when they arrived at the scene. The male suspect, identified as 77-year-old John Eames, was armed when police ordered him to put the firearm down, according to SFPD. The police shooting was on May 12.During the attempt to de-escalate, at least one Santa Fe officer shot and hit the suspect after he refused to drop it, according to the department. No police officers were injured in the shooting. Aid was rendered to Eames on the scene before he was taken to a local hospital, where he died weeks later. A paramedic unit was requested after gunshots were heard at the scene. Police are asking people to avoid the 100 block of Calle Ojo Feliz, where the shooting happened.Eames remained in the local hospital until June 6, when he died. He was charged with five counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer and a count of negligent use of a deadly weapon.
