ENOUGH TO SECURE THE BORDER. A LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL PLAYER IS TRAVELING OVERSEAS TO PLAY FOR THE PHILIPPINES, AND HE SAYS HIS HERITAGE PLAYS A BIG ROLE IN THAT. JULIAN POTTER HAS ASKED SEAN ALTER WHAT IT MEANS TO HIM TO PLAY THE GAME HE LOVES. WHEN IT COMES TO BASKETBALL. SEAN ALTER TELLS ME IT MEANS EVERYTHING TO HIM. BUT SO DOES HIS HERITAGE. SEAN IS ABOUT TO PLAY BASKETBALL FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINE ANS, BUT BEFORE THAT, HE GOT HIS START AT VOLCANO VISTA HIGH SCHOOL HERE IN ALBUQUERQUE. IT’S BEEN A LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE, PLAYING HERE. THE CULTURE IS GREAT. THE COACHES ARE GREAT, TEAMMATES ARE GREAT. EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING IS GREAT HERE. THAT’S IT’S A WINNING CULTURE. COACH GREG BROWN SAYS HE’S BEEN KEY TO THE PROGRAM. HE BROUGHT US TREMENDOUS SUCCESS. THIS THING DOESN’T HAPPEN WITHOUT HIM. AND SO, YEAH, IT’S BEEN A BLESSING. WALTER LED THE HAWKS TO BACK TO BACK STATE CHAMPIONS. THE SIX FOOT NINE POWER FORWARD SAYS THE PROGRAM HAS GIVEN HIM EVERYTHING HE COULD ASK FOR AND HE THINKS HIS FAMILY FOR BEING THERE EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. FAMILY IS EVERYTHING. YEAH. MY MY PARENTS HAVE TOLD ME THEY’RE THEY’RE GOING TO BE SUPPORTIVE OF WHATEVER DECISION I MAKE FOR COLLEGE. SEAN SAYS BASKETBALL HAS GIVEN HIM OPPORTUNITY TO GROW AND NOT JUST PHYSICALLY, BUT ALSO INTO THE PERSON HE’S BECOME. HE SAYS HE TAKES PRIDE IN HIS HERITAGE. HIS DECISION TO HEAD OVERSEAS AND REPRESENT THE PHILIPPINES MADE MORE SENSE THAN ANY OTHER CHOICE THEY’RE OFFERING ME. LIKE A PLACE TO STAY, LIKE A FAMILY. THEY THERE’S REALLY NOTHING MISSING WHEN IT COMES TO PLAYING IN THE PHILIPPINES OR PLANNING TO PLAY FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU? THAT MEANS A LOT. I MEAN, I’M REPRESENTING A WHOLE COUNTRY BEING A I’M AMERICAN. WHILE HIS STORY HERE IN THE LAND OF ENCHANTMENT IS COMING TO AN END, I’M SUPER EXCITED FOR HIM. HIS HARD WORK IS PAYING OFF AND HE’S JUST GETTING STARTED, REALLY. HE’S GOT A LOT OF HARD WORK AHEAD OF HIM, BUT HE’S HE’S DEFINITELY READY FOR IT. When it comes to basketball, Sean Alter tells KOAT it means everything to him, but so does his heritage. As someone who is half Filipino, he tells KOAT why it means so much to him and the decisions he's made up to this point. Sean is about to play basketball for the University of the Philippines!But before that, he got his start at Volcano Vista High School here in Albuquerque. “It's been a life-changing experience playing here,” Alter said. “The culture is great. The coaches are great. Teammates are great. Everything is great here. It's a winning culture.”Coach Greg Brown says he's been key to the program. “He brought us tremendous success,” Brown said. “This thing doesn't happen without him and so yeah it's been a blessing.”Alter led the Hawks to back-to-back state championships. The power forward says the program has given him everything he could ask for, and he thanks his family for being there every step of the way. “Family is everything, my parents have told me they're going to be supportive of whatever decision I make for college,” Alter said.
