Thousands of balloons took to New Mexico's sky at the 50th Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. While balloons were able to fly most days, some days saw weather cancellations and even some scary moments. We recap some of the headlines and some of the best sights from this year's Balloon Fiesta. Oct. 1Balloon Fiesta's first day kicked off with great weather for flying along with some events new to Balloon Fiesta. Day 1 started with a Drone Light Show that looked at 50 years of Balloon Fiesta. The America's Challenge Balloon Race and a tribute to Sid Cutter were part of that show. The green flag was raised on day 1, and hundreds of balloons took to the sky as weather conditions were initially great. However, some balloons chose not to fly later in the morning as winds began picking up. After the winds kicked up, Sky 7 flew over the scene of a rough landing involving a balloon in downtown Albuquerque. From Sky 7, we saw the envelope of a balloon draped over a light pole after landing on a roadway. No injuries were reported in that balloon incident. Saturday night's balloon glow was canceled after weather conditions at Balloon Fiesta Park were determined to be not favorable for inflation.Oct. 2Sunday's mass ascension was delayed after weather conditions were not favorable for flying early in the morning. Balloon Fiesta officials monitored those conditions throughout the morning, and officials gave the green flag just after 7:30 a.m.Weather conditions were perfect for many balloons to participate in a Balloon Fiesta tradition of a splash and dash. Pilots in the air will take a dip in the Rio Grande, splashing into the water and quickly lifting back off. Balloons weren't the only thing in the air on the first weekend of Balloon Fiesta. Love also made an appearance. We met with a couple who decided to get married at the 50th Balloon Fiesta. The couple had been waiting for a few years to tie the knot after the COVID-19 pandemic delayed them from celebrating their special day. Oct. 3Day 3 of Balloon Fiesta was a disappointing one as the weather forced officials to cancel all balloon flights and competitions. That didn't stop balloon pilots from inflating for a static display. Oct. 4The fourth day of Balloon Fiesta was much better than the third day. Weather conditions were favorable for flying for most of the morning after early morning rain showers cleared out of the area. Conditions were even favorable for some special shapes to take to the sky. Oct. 5The weather started becoming a trend throughout Balloon Fiesta as all flying events were canceled due to weather on day 5. The red flag flew over the park, to the dismay of many. However, dawn patrol balloons did inflate for a static display. Oct. 6Balloons took to the sky on day 6 of Balloon Fiesta, with many special shapes making an appearance. Things took a turn late in the morning when it was announced that a popular special shape balloon was stolen. Joelly Bee was stolen from the parking lot of the crew's hotel. Police later found the balloon and were happy to report Joelly was safe. The special shape balloon glow was canceled on day 6 due to unfavorable weather conditions. Oct. 7Special shapes were again the star of the show on day 7 of Balloon Fiesta. Flight conditions were absolutely perfect to see many special shapes fly, even some complex shape balloons. Airabelle took to the sky on day 7, along with Joey, Lilly and Joelly Bee. On Friday, the weather became the story at Balloon Fiesta. After Balloon Fiesta, officials raised the green flag for the Special Shapes Glowdeo, a sudden thunderstorm developed over Balloon Fiesta Park. The thunderstorm caused panic as mixed messages were sent to tens of thousands at the park advising attendees to evacuate and seek shelter, with no word of the situation until much later in the evening. Oct. 8Day 8 of Balloon Fiesta was dominated by bad weather conditions. All flying events on Saturday morning were canceled due to the weather. Saturday night's balloon glow was also canceled due to weather conditions. Oct. 9Balloons were able to take to the sky on the final day of Balloon Fiesta. The final mass ascension was delayed after windy conditions subsided late in the morning.
