Celebrate New Mexico: Roswell
All year long we are celebrating our state's unique history and culture and no one area is the same. Today, we take the time to celebrate the unique story that Roswell has to offer. From John Chisum to UFOs, Roswell is one unique place in New Mexico. Early history of Roswell and the surrounding areaEarly settlersThe settling of Roswell can be traced back to the 1860s. Settlers first arrived in the area and created a town called Missouri Plaza, about 15 miles southwest of present day Roswell. The town wasn't able to grow or thrive due to the lack of water in the area. Due to that lack of water, settlers packed up and moved northeast and founded what is known to day as Roswell. Settlement of BlackdomTwenty miles south of Roswell, you'll find a ghost town that's very important in our state's history. The community of Blackdom was settled by homesteaders fleeing from Jim Crow Laws and threats from the Klu Klux Klan. It became the first African American community in the state and the population rose to 300 in 1908. A drought in the 1910s forced settlers to abandon the town by 1920. Despite abandoning the town, many descendants from the community of Blackdom still live across our state. New Mexico Military InstituteOne of the oldest and most prestigious schools in New Mexico is tucked away in Roswell. The New Mexico Military Institute was founded in 1891, which makes the school older than the State of New Mexico. Leaders of the preparatory high school and junior college pride themselves on education, leadership, and self-improvement. Buildings at the school date back to the early 1900s.See the video and story above for more.Roswell UFOsRoswell became known for the famous "Roswell Incident."On July 8, 1947, the Roswell Army Air Field announced they had found a "flying disk" on a ranch near Corona, New Mexico. Since the discovery of that "flying disk," which has been reported to be a balloon, many have searched for answers about what was really found. We stopped by the Roswell UFO Museum and Research Center and talked with someone who's been researching the incident for three decades. The aura of the "Roswell Incident" has sparked lots of tourism to the city prompting the city to hold a UFO festival every summer to commemorate the incident and the theories that surround it. See the video above for more. Roswell Air CenterThe Roswell Air Center is a big destination for aircraft, but not in the way you might think. The Roswell Air Center's origins date back to World War II, when the U.S. Army used the field as a base for the United States Army Air Corps. The base was later renamed Walker Air Force Base but was later closed by the U.S. military in the 1960s. At the time of the closure, it was one of the largest in the Air Force's Strategic Air Command. After the closure, the base was redeveloped into the Roswell International Air Center. Since the field became the Roswell Air Center, it's been used as a destination for storing aircraft. The facility has a 13,000 foot long runway and stores hundreds of aircraft for both domestic and international airlines. Planes are stored in Roswell because the weather makes for ideal conditions to store large aircrafts. Watch the video above to learn more about "The Boneyard."Not only does the Roswell Air Center store aircraft, but it also hosted Felix Baumgartner and the Red Bull Stratos Team for a record-breaking freefall from the stratosphere in October 2012. Bottomless LakesBottomless Lakes State Park is a hidden oasis on the outskirts of Roswell. The spring-fed crystal clear lakes are one of the reasons it was made New Mexico's first state park in 1933. There are multiple lakes that offer lots of opportunities for recreation from paddle boarding to scuba diving. Watch the video above to see the uniqueness Bottomless Lakes State Park has to offer.
